Emily's apartment
Emily knew from the first visit that the apartment had potential. The light, location, and proportions were exactly what she was looking for, but the layout needed work.
The bathroom was long and narrow, the kitchen was separated, and the space was not being used to its full potential. After reviewing the floor plan, the solution became clear: switch the kitchen and bathroom areas and open the kitchen toward the living room.
This simple change transformed the apartment. The bathroom became spacious, the living area became more open and connected, and the entire home gained a much better flow.
For Emily, it became the home she had imagined from the beginning. For me, it was the kind of project I enjoy most: practical, personal, and full of potential.
During demolition, we discovered an existing pipe that could not be removed or relocated. It was a real challenge, because it sat exactly where the new kitchen layout was planned.
The solution was to raise the kitchen onto a custom-built platform, with a small set of stairs leading up to it. This allowed us to work around the technical limitation while giving the kitchen its own clear presence in the apartment
What first looked like a problem became one of the strongest design moments in the project.
The result is a more open, practical, and modern home that still keeps its classic Berlin Altbau character. The new layout created a spacious bathroom, a connected kitchen and living area, and a much better flow throughout the apartment. What once felt limited and divided now feels calm, functional, and personal exactly the kind of home Emily had imagined.
